Alvin Lee 1944-2013

ALvin_Lee.jpg

Guitar wizard and co-founder of British blues legends, Ten Years After, has passed away at the age of 68.

A message posted on his official site earlier today (3/6/2013) reads: "With great sadness we have to announce that Alvin unexpectedly passed away early this morning after unforseen complications following a routine surgical procedure."

Lee was born in Nottingham in 1944 and founded Ten Years After in the mid-'60s with bassist Leo Lyons. Their 1967 debut album was followed by a string of LPs including Undead (1968), Stonedhenge (1969) and Ssssh (1969), but it wasn't until Lee's trepanning, virtuoso performance of I'm Going Home at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 that the band rocketed to fame and success on both sides of the Atlantic.

Deciding to shun the rock superstar status and pursue other projects, Lee left the band in 1973. Since that time he has recorded over 10 studio albums. His final LP, Still on the Road to Freedom, was released in 2012

Mission Statement

The mission of the West Michigan Blues Society is to promote and preserve the rich history of blues music as it concerns West Michigan and its impact on American culture and commerce in musical arts and industry.

The West Michigan Blues Society was established in 1990 to:

  • Promote blues appreciation by sponsoring concerts, festivals, and community events.
  • Cooperate and correspond with other blues oriented groups, locally and around the world, and exchange ideas that will enhance the program locally and nationally.
  • Provide an opportunity for blues fans to meet and enjoy the fellowship of others with similar interests.
  • Foster greater awareness and love of the blues among the community through teaching and performing blues in schools and other venues.
  • The WMBS is a non-stock corporation organized and run by a member-elected Board of Directors.
