WGVU-FM 88.5/95.3 in Grand Rapids has aired the Friday & Saturday night Blues program for over a decade. The program's DJ, Greg Buben is a major supporter of local and regional blues artists and, and his "Blues Happenings" are the hub of promotion for local blues shows. Until December 26, 2009 his Saturday edition of the show has run until 4AM, with a majority of listeners tuning in during bar hours between 9PM-2AM, to find out who is playing where, and blues fans often request to hear local artists they have heard minutes before in the clubs. He also spins new blues from national labels such as Alligator, Telarc, Blind Pig, Electro-Fi and more. Unfortunately, the general manager has decided that Greg's program will no longer run after midnight on Saturdays and will be replaced with a nationally syndicated pre-recorded program and live blues programming and the request line will be closed after midnight as well. Blues musicians and fans depend on live blues programming, especially on public radio stations such as WGVU for both airplay and promotion of shows, and new modern national acts do as well.
